Windows on the Past Pine Bluffs Archaeology Site

Step Back 10,000 Years at the High Plains Archaeology Site

Tucked into the rolling hills near Pine Bluffs, Wyoming, lies a place where the past whispers through the earth. The High Plains Archaeology Project is more than a dig—it’s a time capsule of life on the plains, uncovering stories that date back over 10,000 years.

In the 1980s, a unique partnership between the University of Wyoming and the Town of Pine Bluffs sparked a groundbreaking archaeological study. What they found reshaped our understanding of the High Plains. Tools, artifacts, and traces of ancient dwellings reveal that native peoples lived, hunted, and thrived here for millennia.

To preserve this priceless window into the past, a protective building was constructed in the late 1990s. Today, you can walk among the evidence of early life on the plains. Inside the site, a portion of the original excavation has been carefully maintained, and interpretive panels guide you through the incredible discoveries made during the project.
